Telling the difference between fn keys and letters (browsers give same keycode)

2 New Member
I'm trying to capture keys in firefox and IE to use function keys for processing. I've got the capture function working correctly however I have noticed that the function keys and the letters overlap thier keycode value, for example the broswer returns 114 for F3 as well as the letter r. Given that is there a way that I can tell the difference between the function key and the letter?

Heya, Donrawe. Welcome to TSDN!

Changed thread title to better describe the problem (did you know that threads whose titles do not follow the Posting Guidelines actually get FEWER responses?).

While trying to write a simple game which uses the arrow keys, I noticed that under the subroutine that handles mybase.keydown, everytime I pressed any arrow keys, or in fact any of the 9 keys above it (End, Del, PGDN etc) that the result for e.keycode was 'none', yet it still picked up my keypress! All other keys work fine. This problem only recently happened. I have tried the following to help: Roll back to D.X 9.0a and 9.0 SDK, remove...

Im currently building a MUD telnet client in VB .NET and am having trouble mapping functionality to certain keys. the user is focused on a command textbox and can enter text and send it etc etc but i also want the arrow keys and the numberpad to have special functions. now generally i like the keydown event because it has access to e.keycode which will give me easy acces to capture any key on the board. keycode also differentiates the...

I'm writing some stuff where I wish to allow the cursor keys to control elements in a page. This has not been a problem except with Safari which appears to duplicate the keydown and keyup events which are fired when the cursor keys are pressed. I.e. pressing and releasing say, K, results in one keydown event followed by one keyup event. Press any of the cursor keys results in two keydown events followed by two keyup events. A page...

Because of the requirements on a high-speed data entry form, I need to reliably trap certain keys (specifically the "/", "*", "-", and "+") keys on the 10-key pad and treat them as "Function keys". This MOSTLY works, however I am finding that not with all workstations. Does anyone know what kind of nuance might be involved here and how to avoid it? (I know it can be done because the CICS emulators on these same workstations are able to...

Hi, How can I convert KeyCode's to the real character? For instance: the row of keys on a keyboard under the F-keys return as Keycode the Keys.Oem1, Keys.Oem2 etc... Depending on the keyboard layout it is another character (and also depening on the fact if you have used Shift or Alt Gr). But my problem is: I would like to knwo the exact character the user sees on the screen.

Hi Being tested using FF 3 on WAMP server. I have spent a number of hours trying to figure this out myself. I have a html form using table cells and had a request to enable the arrow keys on a keyboard to move through the cells. I found some code and adapted it, and it works well now. Arrow keys move the cursor exactly to the correct cell. There are two things I can't do which I was hoping you guys would give me some help on. I am a...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
