Javascript 101 - Calling a CGI script

Howdy,

I have a CGI/Perl script that simply creates a few Javascript
variables. For example:

--------myCGI.pl----------------------------------------
print("Content-type: text/javascript\n\n" ));
print("var x = 5");
Now in my .html code I have TWO <script> blocks where I call the code
as follows:

<script type="text/javascript" src="cgi-bin/myCGI.pl"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">

All other Javascript functions, some which refer to the
variables produced by CGI.

</script>
This works just fine, but it seems like there must be a way to just
simply call the CGI script from WITHIN the second block above. Maybe
something like: run("cgi-bin/myCGI.pl"). Does something like this
exist?

Thanks a million.

Surprisingly enough not yet (as a common language standard)

But ajaxoids (IXMLHTTPReques t/XMLHttpRequest solutions) do the trick
pretty close to what you are looking for. Search "Ajax". See also

If that works then how can I stop the php file being loaded directly, that is the user browsing

That subject packs a whallop, so let me explain in better detail what's happening and how it relates to ASPX pages... In a nutshell, if the first <script /on a page is of type "text/vbscript", you cannot use inline JavaScript statements that call setTimeout with functions that start with a double-underscore. This is very relavant to ASPX...

Which is the better approach in working with Javascript? 1. Server side processing: Web server gets form input, runs it into the Javascript module, and PHP collects the output for document prep. 2. Client side processing: Web server gets form input and passes it to PHP which includes the Javascript written in a way to make the form input...
