Need help with methods, and calling them

I have an assignment to do in class that requires making methods that store data (inputing a student name, number of credits,etc) then storing that information elsewhere.

I need some major help in learning methods and how you go about calling them. (Not looking for solution to homework, need to learn how to DO the homework!) Any help?

Since you are using OOP you can user setter methods to set the data fields of a object and getter methods to get the data of an object.

If you want to store it to some external file you can user XML.

I think that'll go over the original poster's head....

Break the problem down.
1. Where are you going to store the data - what arrays, variables do you need?
2. Write some sort of class which contains these arrays, variables as members.

For methods, each method should do a particular task. You should figure out what each of the methods do, before you start writing them. For example you could have one method that printed a number:
public void PrintNumber(int i){
System.out.println("The number is "+i);
}
and you would call it in your code like:
PrintNumber (4);
PrintNumber(-1);
PrintNumber(length); // where length is some int variable.
