The thread (or the encapsulated Runnable) has to cooperate; something like this:

public class MyRunnable implements Runnable {
   private boolean stop;
   public void run() {
      while (!stop) {
         // do cpu intensive things here
      }
   }
   public void stop() { stop= true; }
}
