An excellent place to look for answers to such questions is the API:

http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/

For example, here is the API for executeQuery. Does it allow for null to be returned?

Now given a ResultSet, how can we check if it is empty? Perhaps reading the API for ResultSet will help answer that question.
