Simple Java Knowledge

Hi all, basically i am struggling to understand writing a java applet....i mean i have beginners knowledge on how to progrma with java, but its just what i need to do! basically at the moment i am tryin to write an applet with three labels, three text fields, and when a user inputs the colours variables into the text fields, there will be a small box that changes colour (HOEFULLY) lol...but all i am tryin to ask you guys out there, is i know or could work out the programming on how to do this...its just what steps do i need to take....i have basically understood so far that:

1. i need to declare the import statements
2. i then need to do some kind of init() method to create the labels and the text fields...

but then what?? sooo confused....if anyone can help it would be great!

thanks, regards,

ben
