how to install jdk1.6.0.02 on ubuntu

hi guys i just installed ubuntu i'm new to linux....
i downloaded the jdk1.6.0.02 but now i dont know how to install the jdk and how to run my first program. i extracted the file and patested it in usr/local/jdk...... now what to do i dont please help me how do give path where? i tryed to search in a google but i fail to find the ans. please help..

You shouldn't just store that downloaded file somewhere; you downloaded an
installer and you should run it; it will install all the necessary files for you.
The Sun download site (where you downloaded that installer from) has some
explanatory text telling how you should install your Java jdk.
