The question is too broad and vague to be able to give a short explanation. Which part of multithreading would you like explained and which texts have you read that you didn't understand?

If you really want to know everything about threads etc. Read Doug Lea's
book Concurrent Programming in Java. Doug is the
author of Java's 'concurrent' package. The package existed for years but
finally made it to the core classes through the JSR/166.
