Problem getting Java to work

Hi, I'm not totally sure if this is where to post this, so I am sorry if this isn't...

Anyway...

I have been having lots of trouble with Java on my Windows XP. Bottom line, it doesn't work. I go to a game that uses Java, it says I should download Java. I then go to Java.com, download it, and then it says I still need to download it. This might be important information to resolve my problem: before all of the problems I started messing with some settings...mainly in the browser (Mozilla Firefox to be specific). I tried on both Internet Explorer and on Firefox, yet both give me the same problem. Any ideas?

Thanks!
