OnClick Password Validation

I am very new to this subject. I wish to validate a password to allow access to my website. I need to know the code that will validate the password and then take the user to the homepage. I have the Form already set up I just need the code to tell it what to do. Any help would be greatly apreciated. I am using Dreamweaver 8 if that has any bearing on the way that i would go about this.

How do you want the password to be validated? Do you have the legal passwords stored in a database?
