JDK 1.2 compile issue

I'm a volunteer computer tech for an on-line support website. The following
is an except of one case that the original tech who took it can't resolve

client wrote:

" I have installed JDK1.2 in the F: drive of my computer. When I go to the
F:\jdk1.2\bin directory and try to compile a java program using the javac
command, the system is giving the following error message : 'This program
has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down'. My operating
system is Windows98 and the processor is Intel Pentium 4 with 128 MB of RAM.
I had successfully executed java programs in my computer before. "
---

They don't want to upgrade to 1.4 nor remove all traces to see if it help
clear up the issue.

Does anyone have any thoughts on a possible solution?

Cheers,
Rick
