Email libraries

Dear List:

I have a new micro-project, essentially this needs to connect to a POP3
server, extract an attachment, decompress the attachment, sanity check
the result (HTML), then FTP this to another internet site.

I am looking for a couple of libraries, or code snippets, one to handle
the POP3 part, another to decode the attachment, probably in MIME
format, and then to decompress it. I think there are probably
pre-canned libraries to do this. I'll probably write it in Java, well
at least I want to use Java, the end environment is Linux.

Cheap is good, free is better.
