How do you achieve what? Get the document to open automatically in
the correct application?

When a web server sends data to a web browser, it can tag it with a
content type, which explains to the web browser the nature of the data.
Most web browsers can be configured to respond to this information, and
perform different actions depending upon the incoming data type.

Firstly, make sure the correct content type is being assigned to the
data by the server. Then configure your browser to take the required
action for that content type. (Note: I believe it is still true that
Internet Explorer ignores the content type header in favour of the
file extension in the URL. You might want to post any further
questions to a group more specific to HTTP, etc.)
