messaging based alert system architecture

SC
Hi,
I intend to build a system where events will be triggered when certain
criteria are satisfied. The criteria are based on the calculations on
a large set of data stream that gets updated once a day. You can
think of this system like the stock alert system provided by portals
like Yahoo.

In this design, I need to consider the following parameters:
- Volume of data coming in, thus, the calculations that need to be
performed
- number of events that need to occur

I have thought of using database triggers to providing the triggering
mechanism. i.e. the trigger fires off when new data comes in and then
send messages to JMS topics where different types of calculations
occur in different subscribers.
Otherwise, it seems like I need to use some sort of polling mechanism
to detect changes, which IMHO is not very efficient.

If you have any suggestions, pls let me know.
Thx.
