personally I think that JCretor is the ultimate text-based editing tool.
Many pros and amaturers agree. Even if you grok the RAD GUI
platform of choice, you still MUST text code your program (if it does
anything exciting ) . When it comes to text coding forget everything
else, JCreator (Pro) has it hands down (imho). My Friend Kenny said
that sailors referred to a heavy gale as a Dutch breeze because of the
heartiness of Dutch sailors. In the same honor to the Dutch
programmers, JCreator is a Dutch notepad - it blows everything else away.

try http://www.jcreator.com
The free version is ok, very nice actually, but I'd hate it after being
totally spoiled by the pro version.

java.sun.com just sent me a very cool Java T Shirt mmm so I plug the
NetBeans IDE, just cuz. It is smart, feature rich, but heavy on
the resources and hard to learn.

IBM's Eclipse might be on your list. Eclipse, as in block the Sun, ah,
but Sun recently hooked up behind IBM in the Eclipse movement.

JEdit is another good text based ide.

HTML Kit is probably the best html editor, but it handles any other code
you may want to write, including java. It's toolbox is a set of plugin
widgets that HTMLKit users build and share.

I left out many other good choices. This Frequently Asked Question used
to draw a lot of attention but since there are programmer's resource
ports that have complete lists and descriptions and they are almost
unavoidable in even a cursory web search.
Any good download distribution site should have a programming category.
