Java won't work, please help

I have a java app at work I used when I had Windows 98 and never had a
problem. I did a clean install of Windows XP and of course Java was not
included. I went to Sun, download Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v 1.4.2
and Java 2 Runtime Environment SE v 1.4.1_01. The Java app will not work
with WinCP. I have installed the Windows XP Service pack 1, IE service pack
1 and I have downloaded Netscape and Opera. The same problem happens in all
browsers, I get the grey box with the Red X in the top left hand corner. I
thought it may be a problem with javascript but after testing javascript it
seems the problem is with Java, not javascripting. I don't know too much
about this, I have very limited knowledge of Java VM. That is the only
application that I have problems with. Can anyone give me any ideas on what
to try. Thanks

Hi Steven,
If you have the java console enabled, which you can do thru Settings,
Control Panel, Java Plug-in, you should be able to tell what error
messages are being thrown when the app attempts to load. If you tell us
what error messages are being thrown somebody here can possibly tell you
what's wrong.

A red X in the corner is not usually a Java problem - Java problems would
usually show a grey box and nothing else. A red X indicates that an image
could not be loaded.

no i have seen X when the applet could not be loaded

one did u install on XP ?
2> do all other applets work ? or you cant see applets at all?

i also use XP & had installed jre1.4.1_02 when i tried to uninstall
....it never did let me ....then somehow i managed to do it (you
require registry cleaner as some of the entries are not removed, i
dunno if its MS bug or JAVA or installer bug ...whoever it is its us
who pay ;))

second thing is when you compile applets (or ne java program) if the
ver is higher then you can not run with lower versions of jre
i mean suppose i compile a program with jsdk1.4.2 then i can not run
it with jre1.4.1_02 but its upward compatible meaning prog compiled
with 1.4.1_02 can be run with jre 1.4.2
so if you can see other applets then this applet might be compiled
with higher versions .....hence the red cross
if you dont see applets at all then there must be some problem

of course i forgot to mention the most basic thing that is if the
applet fails to load for any reason(that can be found in java console)
for instance classpath not found or any other exception thrown , you
will get a red cross :)

Another most trivial question to ask: is the JVM installed? On some
versions of XP, Microsoft did not provide a JVM at all.
