Sun JDK 1.4 vs 1.3 Compiler

Is there any bytecode advantage to using the Sun 1.4 compiler vs the 1.3
compiler (on Windows).

Does the 1.4 compiler produce better and/or faster bytecode than the 1.3
compiler?

In other words, is there any advantage to compiling code that was developed
against JDK 1.3 and compiling with the 1.4 compiler?

Thanks very much for feedback.

Tim,
I don't know if there are any advantages by compiling with 1.4.
However, I do know one big disadvantage. I believe the 1.4 compiler is
the first a in a long while to not generate backward compatible
byte-code by default. So, probably an large program will not work with
any prior release.

Even targeting 1.2, I experience an unexplainable
IllegalMonitorStateException being thrown when running the Sun 1.2 VM for
Windows with symcjit enabled (the default).

I've seen other postings on the web of similar problems.

Note that none of my code is invoking Object.wait, Object.notify, or any
variant thereof.
