IIS limit on port 80 websites

533 Recognized Expert Contributor
Hi folks,

Is there a built-in limit in IIS that stops you creating more than 5 websites with the same port? I'm running five separate sites on my server at present, all using port 80 and host header values to redirect each one to the correct content but I'm about to start hosting 2 new subdomains on my site and IIS won't let me use port 80 any more.

Many thanks in advance,

Found my problem!

IIS will allow unlimited websites on W2K3 using port 80 providing that at least one variable (host header, IP address or port) is unique to each website - so I can specify any number of sites on my IP, using port 80, but each site has a unique host header value.
The problem was arising because I was specifying an SSL port (443) for the sites, and because the information is encrypted, host headers aren't compatible with SSL, and therefore I was getting a conflict from two or more sites using port 443 for secure communications.

Problem sorted! Just got to use other port numbers for SSL in future!

if you're using SSL dont you have tohave unique IP addresses anyways?

That's an option - or the other option is to specify a port other than 443 for SSL (as I only have one network card so only one IP address - but about 4 or 5 websites, two or three of which require SSL).

Hi, I would be grateful if someone could clarify my rather confused ideas of the 10 connection limit on XP/2000 when its being used as a server. (I realise that XP is really a client op sys with limited server capability, I am also aware you can kludge the number to 40, but assume I do not want to do that). As I understand it XP Pro will support 10 simultaneous inbound (SYN) connections (5 for XP Home). My confusion arises as to what...

When I was creating an ASP.NET 2.0 web site on a site on a remote server not on port 80 I was getting the error '\server:port\' is not a valid virtual path. This does not happen on my local server (which uses port numbers other than 80). I fixed it by adding a DNS entry and defining the website with this host header name and having the site on port 80.

Mysql is filling my /var partition because the log limit doesn't seem to be respected. I've tried many different settings in /etc/mysql/my.cnf but nothing works. Logrotate is not enabled/configured. I just want mysql to use a maximum of, let's say, 1GB of my /var partition The log is /var/log/mysql/

I set outputcache to 30 minutes for all .aspx pages on my asp.net 2.0 websites. If a search engine (such as Google) crawl my site, it can hit thousands of pages within a few minutes and thus produce a large amount of page caches. This could use a lot of memory and impact other websites running on the same machine. My question is: how can I limit the memory size (e.g. to 100MB) used by the cache? I can set the following in web.config:

Hi, For an existing asp.net 2.0 web site which is not on the default web site, or uses a different port number, what is the syntax to precomplie using aspnet_compiler? e.g. aspnet_complier -v "/myvirtualdirectory" works if my web site is at http://servername/myvirtualdirectory but what do you do if your as.net web app is at http://servername:7654/myvirtualdirectory ?

Hey All, I have some classes that I recently built for a website which uses the HttpWebRequest & HttpWebResponse objects from the System.Net namespace. Basically, the classes rap submitted data up, connect to external websites on external servers and post / remove the data from these other sites. It works fine locally but when uploaded to the BCentral production server, the outgoing requests get shutdown.

Hi folks, I am having a problem using PHP to launch an application on the server. All the basics work, but I cannot launch more than 4 instances of the application. This application functions as a server itself, and I specify the port number when I launch it, so my theory is that I am reaching some limit on network connections. This is my basic launch sequence:

Hello everyone, I generally look at Google and other websites before I post a question, but trust me I still cannot find and answer to this problem. I'm using VB.net. My problem being is that I don't know how to redirect the serial port output to a selected file. I looked in the forum but no luck. Here is the sequence of events. User selects a file to write to. No problem here. Sends a command to the equipment to start outputting...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
