making nowrap work when width is ignored

Hi
In the example below on a normal size screen everything looks the
way
you would think it would (on IE6). My problem is what happens when I
add
more entries into the table (equivilent here to making the IE window
smaller)

- If you make the window smaller then the first column text starts to
wrap, which I don't want
- If you remove the width part, which gets ignored anyway, then the
text
no longer wraps and a scrollbar appears, which is what I want.

The problem is that I do want to set the width of the first column,
but
I want the rest of the table to be as small and fitted as possible

Any ideas?

Flat or sideways?

Flat obviously. According to the McVities CSS 2.2 spec, measurements
specified using the hobnob unit should always be made against plain
hobnobs held flat against the monitor. (Chocolate coated hobnobs make
your screen all dirty.)

Your screen is about half a hobnob wider than mine then :-(

If anyone would like to know exact measurements, please send a
pack of plain hobnobs to the address in the whois for my site.
(And a pack of chocolate ones to convince me to post the results
;-) )

It's worth noting that the use of hobnob units can impede keyboard
navigation, snice the crumbs get stuck in the keys whilst measuring

Only if your keyboard is situated directly in front of your
screen, which isn't the right place. You'd end up with either
repetitive strain injury, or too much radiation, not too mention
bad eyesight.

True. I have my screen on the desk in front of me, the mouse on the desk
as well, and the keyboard is in Bangladesh.

I use my mouse to copy and paste messages one character at a time. Unlike
Windows, X11 has sensible mouse-only copy and pasting, so I can sometimes
do up to six words per minute!

Excellent!

But I think I have a faster way for you:
Get on MSN with audio, and dictate the words to the person that
has your keyboard in front of him/her.

Provided they have a pc to actually activate MSN of course.
Else it would get pretty expensive using regular telephone :\

The keyboard's not plugged in though. Do you really think the wire would
be long enough? Tch!
