Getting design skills?

Hi,

I browse sites like the CSS Zen Garden, and I often wonder how those
guys get those design skills.

Obviously, they probably went to school for many years and it takes
lots of practice. But how can a code monkey - like myself - learn
some basic techniques? Where does one go to study color theory,
graphic techniques, etc...? What books do people here recommend?

Thanks.

You'll find not a few on this ng who like to BASH - the designs at Zen
Gardens.

Myself, I don't understand that attitude. I don't always like
everything I see, there. But I adopted some things, and was generally
inspired by the idea of letting CSS, alone, dictate sometimes wildly
different layout/presentation of exactly the same information.
