browser bug or bad CSS?

looking at this sample layout:

The shadow background along the left side of the content area will
display to the height of the viewport, but if the page is scrolled
down, the shadow does not appear in the area that was not originally
displayed in the window. I would like the shadow to display all the
way to the bottom of the page when scrolled. Is there a mistake in my
CSS or is the browser rendering this page correctly?

without having looked at the code: you probably set that
shadow to be 100% height of the body or something. Then this
is the result. If you want it as tall as the page, you
should set it to be the height of the page itself.
