Text-selection area locking to bottom of page in IE: definitive solution ref?

P: n/a

I apologise in advance for what must surely be a regular question to this

I have an HTML page which is being controlled by either of two stylesheets,
both using absolute positioning. Under the control of one of the
stylesheets the page displays with no issues, but with the other selecting
text with a mouse in Internet Explorer locks the end of the selection to the
bottom of the page. Both stylesheets validate well.

I know this must be a regular problem, because even some of the pages in CSS
Zen Garden suffer from it. But in some hours of net-research I haven't
discovered a solution, or managed to isolate the problem to a specific
element or group of elements. I wonder what I'm missing.

Could somebody recommend a definitive idiots' guide on the subject?
