static width and centered content

Hi all,

I want to set the width of my webpages so that they always appear
centered and at a resolution of 800x600.

How can I accomplish this in my stylesheet ?

An example of the site can be found here: http://www.sgtclog.nl

Thanks

Dear Brian,

Ummm anyone ever accuse you of being en eye-opener ? ;-)

After reading through your site and your comments, I have to admit I
never looked at it that way.

Thanks for the 'slap on the wrist' ;-)

You cannot force anything on users.

and at a resolution of 800x600

How could any technology force a resolution on a device that is
incapable of that resolution? How could a technology force a
resolution even it it were capable? Better still, why would you
*want* to force this?

BTW, please read the very recent thread on fixed width. This has been
discussed to death. :)

Css is optional. Nothing in css can be relied upon. That, btw, is
not a weakness but a strength.

That's rather gererous of you. The term more often applied to me is
curmudgeon. ;-) And in that spirit, please refrain from top-posting.
:-p

In case you don't realize it, there is no reason to want a certain
resolution for a web page. A properly authored page -- i.e., where
you did not add unnecessary presentation restrictions -- will display
fine on any browser, at any resolution. That's the magic of the web.
If you'll forgive me for beating a dead horse, that means that one
must do *more* work to make a page less accessible. A page that you
might find interesting:

NB: one link on this page is broken; another contains no useful
information. :( But the other links should be helpful.
