Icon after off site link

I would like to us an icon after an off site link to show it is an off
site link. I have found Q-bullets and they suggest using this
<img align=middle width=11 height=11 hspace=1 src="remote_a.gif"> after
the link and before the </a> if I try to validate the page to 4.01 strict
it fails as it says that "align" and "hspace" are not valid, it validates
okay as transitional. Is there a way to create the align and/or hspace
using css?

vertical-align, and the various margin properties.

All I can seem to get it to do is align with the text bottom

Gosh, what familiar looking icons :)

The only reference to vertical-align I can find applies to the icon class.
However, I can't find any elements with that class in the HTML.
