page broken in IE5

hi
Yesterday I posted the question below hoping someone could solve the basic
problem at alt.html. Anyway, only one person replied and he thinks I'm best
off just having a text only version for IE5, perhaps that is what I will do,
but it would be nice if someone here could solve the problem so that it
works in all browsers. So, can I ask the good people of this group to apply
their skills to the problem outlined below:

Hi
My page is OK in all browsers except IE5 win2000 and IE5.2 Mac

I have a publically available page from browsercam showing the problem at

http://www.browsercam.com/public.aspx?proj_id=13032

Basically, the content which is contained within a div called
'contentcontainer' is not positioned correctly, its tight against the left
side of the screen. The page is valid html and valid css (except for the
proprietary ms rules for styling the scrollbars). There must be some reason
why these browsers ignor the relative positioning that I have assigned to
'contentcontainer'

#contentcontainer { position: relative; left: 200px; top: 1em; and so
on..........
the actual page in question is at:

http://www.catalysys.co.uk/sefriendly/

and the css file is:

http://www.catalysys.co.uk/sefriendly/layout2.css

I would be more than grateful if someone could spot what the error is.

BTW - the mac also doesn't render my background image called merge.gif,
which consists of an orange stripe on the left and a cream coloured textured
bit over the rest of the screen.

thanks
David

The link below may or may not be of help to you regarding your Mac IE5
problem. Relative positioning is dodgy with that browser.
<http://developer.apple.com/internet/css/ie5cssbugs.html>
Two validators and iCab love your markup, but you have a bare "&" at line
97 and a bare copyright symbol at line 159 in your HTML. Someone enlighten
me.

Thanks for the link, it looks very interesting, I will read all it has to
say on relative position bugs. I see what you mean about the bare & and bare
copyright symbol. I did the code for this page quite a few months ago. I
can't understand why I didn't use the entity code for these two characters -
come to think of it, why does the browser display them at all, don't they
have to be coded? A bit confused about this - anyone out there know?

thanks

The copyright symbol is a perfectly ordinary character; there is no need
to use a character reference if your editor allows direct entry of the
character.

As for the ampersand, I can't unambiguously decipher the HTML spec, but
it would appear that there is no objection to using it followed by white
space, as it cannot then be confused with a character reference. But
it's probably wise to use & anyway.
