margins IE6 vs Moz

I am about out of my mind with the margin issue. Is there any rational
way to deal with this? I am floating a simple side bar menu, instead of
using tables. I need a margin to allow a background graphic to show...
but I can only make it work in one browser and not the other, depending
on what margin I set.

The background graphic is about 100px wide and so, I need the sidebar to
be 100px to the right.

Is there some way to do this without pulling out what's left of my hair?

You don't provide much information, but my crystal ball suggests adding
the following magic incantation to the very top of your HTML file:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN"

(And if you want to know the dark secrets behind it, Google the archive
on "browser sniffing" and "quirks mode".)
