session id expiration and server notification ?

my session cookie expires when user closes all browsers (that's fine)

how can my server know about this ? how does websphere and others delete
stored data from their servers ?

It can't. It can check for the cookie next time the user visits, and
thus will know about it then.

They guess. They assume that if nothing has happened in a particular
session for X minutes then the session is over.
