I have a strong suspicion this is impossible, but: What if I wanted to
create a mode for displaying a web page, with tiny, superimposed flags
indicating the locations of each opening and closing inline and block tag,
without the flags themselves disturbing the layout of the page's content?
Can that be done by adding any combination of additional markup or CSS to
the page (a) in theory or (b) in any of today's browsers?
How about if minimal disturbance were acceptable, on the order of what you
get if you temporarily turn borders on for all your tables so you can see
your page's layout?

Or enable 'My style sheet' in Author mode (File > Preferences > page
style). This will give access to all user styles in author mode.
