text selection problem under IE6 with position: absolute

Hi,

I'm having some trouble with IE6 and position: absolute.

Try selecting some text from this page! (Macromedia template)
http://morch.com/m2/prof/prof.htm

Greatly simplified example:
http://morch.com/m2/divs.html

When I have an absolutely positioned layer, I cannot select any text
in it with the mouse. Is there another way to do acheive the same
result, but where IE6 can select text? The problem does not exist with
Mozilla, but I've gotta support IE...

What options do I have in achieving what I'm trying to do in
http://morch.com/m2/prof/prof.htm
sub menus and all, if I want to be able to select text too? Are
standard tables the only option?

I'm surprised I can't find any info on what appears to me to be a
glaring bug. Isn't CSS recommended instead of tables?

Sincerely,

Peter

Well... try this in Google Groups:
select bug ie6 position absolute

I'm somewhere down there in the result list and hopefully have
something to say. In fact the only workaround I know is using other
means of positioning! It's rather bad.

CSS is better than table-layout when used correctly, but it's not
implemented flawlessly in popular browsers. You still have to invest
some time in workarounds, but I prefer to do that in a single file
instead of every HTML.

Strange - I just tried it in IE 6 (6.0.2800), and it *will* let me
select the text, but only from the point I click to the beginning of
the line - still a bug, but different from the one you describe.

I don't know of a solution, I'm afraid.
