I am writing pages that have hrefs to Word docs and
Excel files. I'd like the link to function so that
when it is clicked on in IE, instead of the browser
showing the Word or Excel document that the user is
prompted to save the file. Any idea how to do this?
And when it's clicked on in Mozilla, what should it do?
Actually, you'd probably have a better chance of fooling Mozilla into
doing this, by changing the MIME type headers sent by the server; IE has
the nasty habit of second-guessing MIME types by file sniffing,
extension checking, etc., in violation of the specs.
However, the MIME type isn't supposed to tell the browser what it must
do with the data, only to tell it what data type it is; it's up to the
browser to decide what to do with it.
