doctypes and tables cells

I am struggling to get one of my left table cells to cover the entire
height of the page. The backgroung cell is set to grey and the cell
hieght is 100%

<td width="196" height="100%" bgcolor="#CED2D9" valign="top">
<div style="padding:15;color:ffffff" class="tah9"> </div></td>

When I do not define a doctype it works and the grey background goes
to 100% but when the doctype is there:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html>

the cell stops half way down the page1! Would anyone be able to tell
me how to fix this?

thanks

My, what odd tabular data you have.
<td width="196" height="100%" bgcolor="#CED2D9" valign="top">
<div style="padding:15;color:ffffff" class="tah9"> </div></td>
Gosh! Syntax errors! http://validator.w3.org/ (and its companion - the CSS
validator).
When I do not define a doctype it works and the grey background goes
to 100% but when the doctype is there:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
the cell stops half way down the page1!
This is because you are causing your browser to enter Standards mode, which
causes it to perform less error correction and emulation of the bugs in
earlier versions of the browser.
Would anyone be able to tell me how to fix this?

See above comments on syntax errors.

I tried to validate the document but was not sucessful in doing that.
PLease could you tell me what is wrong with

<td width="196" height="100%" bgcolor="#CED2D9" valign="top">td>

If you were refering to the <div> element, then deleting that would
surely solve the problem but that code above there still does not give
me a grey bar along the left side of the page!!!

Do your best, then if you don't understand a specific error post it here and
you'll get an explanation.

Several things.... assuming its real tabular data that should be:

<td>

or maybe

<td class="someclass">

and there almost certainly shouldn't be a "td>" dangling on the end.
If you were refering to the <div> element

What div element? Try to quote apropriately.
