Aligning bullets/numbers in html lists

Hi, is there any way to configure the alignment in lists so that:
a) the bullet or number is lined up with the paragraphs above and below (not indented)
b) if the text in the list item carries over to the next line, it indents to line up with the text that started after the bullet tab.

A sample para would look like:

************************
*************************
**********************
1 ******************
****************
2 *************
3 ******************
**********************
*************

Assign a negative number to the margin or padding for the li. Note that all browsers use margin/padding (forgot which) while IE does the opposite (of course).
