clear frame contents on link change (located in a separate frame)

I am using Dreamweaver CS4 to design a personal website with 3 frames: top, left and right.

The top frame contains 6 tabs (photography, printmaking, sculptures, paintings, constructions, art education).

The left frame is empty BUT when the user clicks on any of the 6 tabs in the top frame, it will bring up a drop down menu inside this left frame. The user would be able to click on the options available from the drop down and display it in the right frame (which is also the main frame).

I have been successful in getting the above to work. However, my problem is, the 'old' stuff remains in the main frame. The idea is to clear out the main frame every time the user clicks on a new tab in the top frame (and subsequently bring up a different drop down in the left frame). I know this is possible but I don't know where to start. I don't know Javascript. Can I use <a href>?
