DIV tags assistance

I have a web application that is divided into footer,header,main,right pane and left pane.Left pane and Right pane hold links...... I need to be able to click my links and change only contents in the main section.. My friend told me that DIV tags can achieve this.But my problem is how?

div elements are generic containers of other html elements. HTML does not programatically do anything since it is not a programming language.
