How to open local files with browsers?

Hi

I work for a public company with a lot of workers.
We all share a file system with no security constraints.

All may access, read or modify any documents, mainly Word and Excel files.

I want to create a html web page for browsers where links wound open the file directly on its original location, so anyone can modify it; instead of downloading it locally on the user PC.

Is it possible? It would be very helpful...

Many thanks

Joćo

Do you mean I could access the files on the computer on your desk through the company's web server? No. Not without an application on the server to do that.

No, no one outside the company can access those files, because I need to insert the company user name and the password on Windows starting page to access my working desktop.

Then I may access any file on the file system and modify it.

I just wanted to create a web page to make the access of the files easier...
We have lots of files, with lots of folders and it's getting complicated to memorize the path for each file, even trough its hierarchy and organization.

Thank you for the quick reply anyway

I do this with Linux and FreeBSD, it's easy, but don't know your set up or what restrictions Windows would have on this.

We have Windows... There's any chance of doing this with Windows...

I confess I don't know FreeBSD.
It's some kind of tool which allows me to do what I'm referring?

Thank you

FreeBSD and Linux are Unix, modern operating systems far more advanced than Windows. I don't use Windows so I hesitate to give any advise on this.

I know many people would prefer Linux than Windows, but we have more than 100 PC all with Windows...

I want the easier and simpler solution

I just want to create a web page whose links open files directly on the file system instead of downloading them locally...

May anyone help me?

Did you think about Remote Directory. I dont know the proper name. But it can be a solution.
Aug 13 '10 #8
What is that exactly? A software that we install on the server?

After a quick google on Remote Directory didn't give any simple suggestion...
