problem with dot in name field of form

it seems to me that when the name field of an input in a form has an entry with a dot in it,it changes the dot to a dash on submitting it.Is there anyway to get over this problem.Thanks for any reply.
for instance
<input type="text" name="sed.com">
on submitting name field becomes sed_com

Fields names should contain A-Z, 0-9, underscores and dashes.

or in other words, they must conform to the definition of (script) variable names.
