Div Tag Turn On And Off Css

hi guys,
i am new to this forum. i have question i would like to ask. i have a div tag with style sheet define on a separate page.below is my htm page.

<div id=blah>
<a href="">link</a>
<img src="">

</div>

so when you hover the link it will change color of the link and create a yellow box around. But i don't want that to do the samething on the picture. i tried <img src="" style=":hover{....}"> but that didnt take over the style sheet of the div tag. Can anyone help.
also I tried to put it outside of the div tag but if i put anything before div tag starts it works fine, if anything below the div tag it will not display anything at all.
like this
<img>img gets displayed
<div></div>----this work fine

<div></div>this doesn't work
<img>-------this doesnt get displayed at all.

i tried <img src="" style=":hover{....}">

The braces are not to be used inline like that. You should do:
<img src="" style="background-color........">

To get the link only to work that way, in your CSS:
a:hover{background-color:yellow}

it still doesn't work. i know how to make it work in css style sheet. i just need to override that class when i'm in the htm page. because i have a link above the picture inside a div.so i want the link to inherit the stylesheet but not the image. could you help. thanks.
