Could anyone please explain how I validate my (beginners) html and CSS during the course of learning to make my own site?

I use:

Linux Ubuntu 7.10
Firefox 2
Basic text editor

To validate your HTML and CSS code, go to the w3c website. They have validation tools for both there that will examine your code for you.
