what really is meta tag

shane3341436
I have never tried to understand what meta tag is. I thought this tag has to do very little with the web page. Can someone tell what this tag is really about and what are the uses of this tag ? Looking forward for your replies. Thank you.

Meta tags are used to increase and improve your search engine results, by using a description of your page, then including in a sperate meta tag keywords / Phrases that may be relevant to your page.

A search engine such as google will then index your pages if it crawls over them. Increasing your chances hits from non direct traffice.

Well, no. The fact that search engines use meta tags, nowadays, is only a side issue and not the true reason. (And there is some current doubt that search engines rely much on meta tags anymore.)

The real reason is to provide information about the web page to the browser/service/whatever is visiting the page. There are many attributes for meta and I'd just look at the W3C spec for more information about it.
