CSS working in IE6 but not in IE7

"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"

when I write this declaration in my jsp file , it works fine in IE7 but the page alignment in IE6 goes for a toss.And if I remove this declaration everything is fine in IE6 but then the css menu is not at all visible in IE7.Pls help.Thanx in advance."
