Change font size in a text area

I have tried to do this several ways.

I have a text area on a form that I want people to be able to type in. When the text area is typed in, the text is very large. I would like to be able to make the text smaller when someone is typing into the form.

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure if this is what you're asking for but you can use CSS to format the textarea.
<style type="text/css">
textarea {font-size:12px; width:200px; height:200px;}
</style>
