Not display all but first line

Hi, I wanted to set a stylesheet attribute so all but the first line
of an element, which is a child of td, are hidden. I used:
td .x { display: none; }
and
td .x::first-line { display: inline !important; }
But this didnt work.
Please let me know any solution to this. Thank you.
