meta tags?

I have just finished building a site for a friends antique business and i want to get them added to the major search engines. In the past i have heard of meta tags used to include keywords and descriptions of pages, however i read something earlier saying these are almost extinct. The things i have done so far are: Adding their business to the google maps database, and used goolges webmaster tools to add and verify (using 1 meta tag: <meta name="verify-v1" content="sC6DrpZU2zpstN4UXbiXEpJB7DOORaNLPtt6SV0O3 Zc=" />) the website. I am assuming this is a good start to getting the site out there, It does not appear in a search but they said that take a bit of time. Is there anything else that should/could be done, and is there a way to add keywords to my site? meta tags?

Yes it is sometimes important for search engines like google to know the keywords so users may find your site faster. Here is the most important keywords you should have:

<meta name="keywords" content="website, fun, games, free">
Some keywords if the user was to enter in one word searches.

<meta name="description" content="This is my site about flash games!">
Tell the search engine what your site is about

<meta name="author" content="Username">
<meta name="copyright" content="Ajm113 Designs - 2007">
This is sometimes important to no one steals the content.

<meta name="revisit-after" content="1 days">
Tell the search engine when to revisit your site.

<meta name="robots" content="index,follow">
This will tell the robots if they should fallow your links or not.


So those are the most important to have when you create a site.

Google (TM) now controls almost 90% of the Search Engine market so it is very important to compose Web pages with their page ranking algorithms in mind. Their page ranking information is at: http://www.google.com/technology/
Note that they ignore Meta tag keywords (as do most of the other search engines).
