Had done that earlier and it didn't work but in any case have moved presentation to css. My css looks like

body {
font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 10px;
font-style: normal;
font-weight: normal;
font-variant: normal;
background-color: #0033FF;
margin: 0em;
padding: 0em;
}
table {
color: #000000;
border-top-style: none;
border-right-style: none;
border-bottom-style: none;
border-left-style: none;
background-color: #FFFFFF;
padding: 0px;
margin: 0 auto;
}
td {
font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 12px;
color: #000000;
text-align: justify;
border-top-width: 0px;
border-right-width: 0px;
border-bottom-width: 0px;
border-left-width: 0px;
}
td.columns {
background-color: #F4F4F4;
}

p {
text-align: center;
}

Try removing the spacing between the tags.

i.e.

if you have

<table>
<tr>
<td>hello world </td>
</tr>
</table>

change it to

<table>
<tr><td>hello world</td></tr>
</table>

If that fixes the problem, then its just internet explorer messing around. old image rendering problem, i think.

this usually caused by images or lists in the 'td' tags.
