Not necessarily. The kind of lighting you get in OpenGL (especially the
"specular" one) is good enough for a bit of gloss. Easy to compute and I
should think programs like Photoshop and the Gimp can do it, although
they would need some 3D information. Ray tracing is if you want complex
reflections and/or refractions, like on these cylinders:
