Is there a bug fix for IE <td> background image problem?

1
I've looked all over Google for a solution for the disappearing background image in IE. My problem code looks like this -

<td colspan="3" background="../images/dots.gif"></td>

It obviously displays fine in FF but is something I just have to wear? I've tried a solution in the style sheet but the problem is the image spans more than one TD.

Any input would be appreciated.

I'm not aware of this disappearing background problem. Not that I would be aware of it. But to give a background image to one cell, give it an id name and set the background in CSS.

#test{
background-image:url("../images/dots.gif")
}

<td colspan="3" id="test">&nbsp;</td>
