Gradient with Background Color

Is it possible to set a background color for a block and place a
gradient with opacity over it? I have something like this created for
some navigation links using <ulwhich works in Firefox but not IE.
I am using opacity styles which should be compatible in both browsers.

Has anyone done this before successfully? Any examples available?
