I think "CSS Mastery Advanced Web Standards Solutions" by Andy Budd is
very excellent.

This will explain the workings of CSS very well indeed. It assumes a
basic knowledge of HTML but that's about it. This will take you from
beginner to expert in knowledge.

For putting the CSS into practice then you might be interested in:

"Eric Meyer on CSS" and "More Eric Meyer on CSS" both of which by Eric
Meyer not unsurprisingly.

The Eric Meyer books are beautifully presented. These are based around
examples/projects which you study.
