Validation question

I have one strange line of code in my combination CSS/Javascript menu that is specifically to provide a little artsy-fartsy drop shadow behind the menu dropdowns in IE only.

If I comment out that line, my CSS validates. With it in, I get a validation error.

I've seen hacks that wiggle around various browser issues but I was just curious about why this throws an error if it's an example of browser-specific code. Or are hacks that only affect certain browsers somehow different? Or do they throw errors as well?

The w3c validator looks at standard code only. If it is IE-only, then it is non-standard, hence the error.

If I'm not mistaken everyone does, but hey your the doctor not me! Why not just leave out the shadow if validation is that important?

That's what I was thinking - it's an IE vs. standards thang. I'd leave it out but the people whose site it is think it's nice.

And yes, girls fart with wild abandon! But only on Tuesdays.
