Problem: large whitespace outside container div

P: n/a

I created a container div to hold all the index page’s content. I’m
satisfied how the content is displayed within the container div;
however, outside the container div, extra blank browser space
(“whitespace”) is displayed:

In Firefox1.5, there are long horizontal and vertical scrollbars with
extra vertical space below the container div, and extra horizontal
space to the right of the container div;

In Opera9.01, same result;

In IE6.0, there’s a long vertical scrollbar with extra space below the
container div.

What am I doing wrong?

The HTML and CSS both validate per W3C.
